Birdworld Kuranda, as the name suggests, plays host to some of the most breathtaking birds on the face of the planet. It serves as one of the tourism pillars of Queensland and the surrounding area, with Kuranda as a whole providing travellers with years of entertainment.

What are the best things to do and see at Birdworld Kuranda?

The joys of Birdworld Kuranda are vast and wonderful in so many different ways, but there are a few activities that stand out to us above the rest.

Some may suspect that a destination such as this would be quite limited in things to do but that couldn’t be any further from the truth. It’s daring, creative and perhaps one of the most underrated spots we’ve seen in the Far North.

In the travel tips we’ll speak more about the level of freedom that’s on the cards at Birdworld Kuranda, but beyond that, there are actual photo opportunities in association with Birdworld that visitors can enjoy.

It’s all about getting up close and personal with some of these guys and girls, making you feel like you’re having a real moment with them.

Bird-watching

It sounds incredibly simple but the beauty of being able to walk around and watch the birds fly from one side of the room to the next really is quite something. The layout and design of Birdworld seems so simple and yet, we think that’s kind of the point.

Instead of all the pomp and circumstance, you can step into a universe that allows the birds themselves to shine. This includes parrots, cockatoos, the almighty Cassowary, Galah, heron and so much more. They are stunning, and we really can’t emphasise that point enough.

How much do Birdworld Kuranda tickets cost?

Adults, who are deemed to be 16 years of age and older, will be charged an incredibly reasonable A$19 to enter Birdworld Kuranda. For children between the ages of 4 and 15 that’ll drop down to A$9.50, whereas infants are able to get in for free.

Any families out there made up of two adults and two children will be able to get a discount price of A$47.50.

There are also plenty of combo and package deals in addition to a yearly pass, but it really does depend on what sort of experience you’re looking for.

How long does it take to get to Birdworld Kuranda from Cairns?

Within the depths of the wilderness lies Kuranda and everything we know and love about this haven of joy. Unlike some local parks this isn’t one you can just walk down to in 10-15 minutes, because instead, it requires the adventure of a road trip.

It’s not the longest journey in the world with most visitors being able to arrive in 35 minutes, with the distance clocking in at around 30km.

Cairns really is the gateway city to some marvellous spots, including the Great Barrier Reef, but Kuranda and everything that surrounds it really does fly under the radar - especially seeing as it’s so close.

What are Birdworld Kuranda’s opening hours?

As tends to be the case for the majority of spots in the Queensland area, Birdworld Kuranda is open between the hours of 10am and 3pm from Monday to Sunday. There’s always a chance that can change on short notice due to the pandemic or perhaps a national holiday, but for the most part, five hours is the allotted visiting time.

Are there any other fun theme parks in Cairns?

There are plenty of other fun parks out there for folks to enjoy in and around Cairns, and that’s especially true of Kuranda. Either before or after going to Birdworld there is also the Skyrail and Scenic Railway to enjoy, proving once and for all that this is one of the best spots for public transport in the entirety of Australia - and no, we aren’t kidding.

There’s actually a specific combo tour that is available too, known as the Birds & Butterflies. Here, you’ll not only be able to head to Birdworld Kuranda, but you can also double down by checking out the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary.

These places are quite literally right next to each other with the Kuranda Koala Gardens being on the other side, so there’s really no excuse not to give it a go.

Travel tips

• Feeding the birds is still allowed with there being the option to purchase some goodies for them upon arrival. With that in mind, don’t show up with some of your own, and really show some love and appreciation to the company by supporting them as much as possible.
• You’re able to bring your own cameras and take plenty of pictures of the birds, providing the excess flash photography isn’t too overwhelming for them. It’s a great way to capture memories for life, so don’t forget to bring it along.
• There are quite a few free flying birds here who call Birdworld home, so whatever you do, don’t try and disrupt their rhythm or scare them when they’re in the air. They are gorgeous beings but they also deserve to go about their day without the fear of being attacked.
• Speaking of attacks, always keep a safe distance from the bigger birds - especially the Cassowary. They’re known not to be huge fans of humans and the last thing anyone wants is to be kicked in the chest, so show some respect.
