What is now known as the Jameson Distillery originally opened in 1780 as the Steins Family Bow Street Distillery. Despite its Irish heritage, it was Scotsman John Jameson who transformed this brand into the internationally renowned sensation it is today.
When Jameson arrived in Dublin in the 1770s, he took a job as the manager of the distillery. Around 20 years later, the venue fell under his ownership and, not long after, changed its name to the John Jameson & Sons Bow St. Distillery.
While today it is the most celebrated venue for whiskey in the city, during the 19th century, distilleries were scattered throughout the city, competing with Jameson for the top spot. The distillery was affectionately dubbed “a City Within a City” by locals because of its assortment of trade workshops, including those for carpentry, painting and copper work, as well as sawmills and a smithy.
Although the distillery faced some struggles in exporting its goods after Ireland declared its independence from Britain, new ways of thinking were embraced to preserve this national treasure. Up until the 1970s, the Jameson Distillery was used as the brand’s primary venue for producing its whiskey.
The site then closed for over 20 years as production was moved to the New Middleton Distillery before it reopened as a tourist attraction in the 1990s.
How to get there?
The Jameson Distillery is located on Bow Street and is accessible via several modes of public transportation. One of the easiest ways to reach the site is via one of the city’s hop-on hop-off buses. If using this service, you will depart the vehicle at the Smithfield stop, located close to the distillery.
Alternatively, you can use the tram system, also known as the Luas, taking the Red Line as far as Smithfield and completing the final 2 minutes of your journey on foot.
When is Jameson Distillery open?
The Jameson Distillery is open seven days a week between 10 AM and 6 PM, enabling everyone to visit the site. The last tour of the day operates 30 minutes before the venue closes.
It’s worth noting that, because of Irish regulations, you will be unable to purchase alcohol in the gift shop or bar before 10:30 AM from Monday to Saturday and 12:30 PM on Sundays.
