Can you visit the castle for free?

While Rosenborg Castle doesn’t offer free admission, you can tour the extensive gardens without an entrance ticket.

Rosenborg Castle has limited spaces available for entrance tickets, so purchasing ahead is essential. What will you see inside the castle?

Tour Rosenborg Castle’s four floors, from the basement to the second floor. The rooms are fully-furnished with wares from the times of Christian IV through Frederik IV. Spy finery fit for a king and daily essentials that have been in place since 1710, when Frederik IV converted the space to storage for the royal collections.

The Dutch Renaissance-style palace is surrounded by green space that includes the King’s Gardens, Denmark’s oldest royal gardens. In the winter, marvel at the geometric evergreen hedges that section off flower beds bursting with color come spring. Pass by the original moat as you enter the palace.

The ground, first and second floors are filled with paneled and ornamented rooms that served as sleeping quarters, drawing rooms, dining halls and a ballroom. Glimpse “The Rose”, the rococo-style dining room for members of the court. See the “Winter Room” that is connected to the wine cellar by a clever speaking tube. View the gilded bedroom where Christian IV took his last breaths in 1648.

Head to the basement to see the wine cellar, the king’s advisor’s quarters and rooms that once served as the kitchen. In this secure and hidden area are Denmark’s most valuable royal articles.

Admire jewel-encrusted tiaras, brooches, necklaces and crowns. Also in the basement are displays of weapons, the Rosenborg wines, a collection of amber and ivory and tools of Ole Romer, advisor to Christian IV.

How can you get there?

From Copenhagen Central Station, there are easy options to reach Rosenborg Castle by car, bus, bike or on foot.

By car

The castle is a 7-minute drive from the station. Take Vesterbrogade to Hammerichsgade which becomes Nørre Voldgade after it crosses H.C. Andersens Blvd. Continue until the road becomes Oster Voldgade and you see the castle and its grounds on your left.

By bus

Bus travel is quick and simple with travel time of about 7 minutes. Take the Farum St. bus from the station to the Norreport stop and walk for about 5 minutes to the castle entrance.

By bike

Biking is an extremely popular way to get around Copenhagen, and there are rental facilities near the train station. To reach the castle by bike, take Vesterbrogade to H.C. Andersens Blvd. Turn left and continue to Norre Voldgade. Turn right and follow the road until you reach the castle.

By foot

You can walk from the station to the castle in about 30 minutes. The 2-kilometer route leads you along major thoroughfares and through parks for a pleasant orientation to the city.

Take Vesterbrogade north to Vester Farimagsgade and turn right. Follow Vester Farimagsgade until Nørre Voldgade and turn left. Continue on Norre Voldgade until you reach the castle grounds on your right.

What are the opening times?

From November through March, Rosenborg Castle is open from 10 AM to 4 PM. The castle is open from 10 AM to 5 PM during April through October. These vary slightly during some weeks.

The last admission is 30 minutes before closing time. There are periodic closures on Mondays, so check the castle’s official website before your visit.

When is the best time of year to visit Rosenborg Castle?

Touring Rosenborg Castle can be enjoyable at any time of year. The peak tourist season in Copenhagen lasts from May to August and is the best time to view the castle’s dazzling gardens.

Come in April to witness the first blooms on the castle grounds and the blossoms on the cherry trees. Experience fewer crowds with a visit in September through March.
